Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced on May 13 that the county, in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health and the Town of North Hempstead, will offer a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats, and ferrets. The event is open to all Nassau County residents and will take place on Saturday, May 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter located at 75 Marino Avenue in Port Washington.
The initiative aims to protect pets and prevent the spread of rabies within the community. Rabies remains a concern among wildlife in the region, especially raccoons and some feral cats.
“I am proud to partner with Supervisor Jen DeSena and the Town of North Hempstead to offer a free rabies vaccination clinic for Nassau pets,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. “This clinic is a great opportunity for residents to make sure their pets are protected and up to date on their rabies vaccinations.”
Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman said, “Rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets is required by New York State law. Rabies has been circulating among wildlife in our region, primarily in raccoons and some feral cats. Ensuring your pet’s rabies vaccination is current helps protect your family and community, and it prevents the need for your pet to face strict quarantine if exposed to an animal that is known to carry and transmit the virus.”
Dogs must be kept on leashes at all times during the clinic while cats and ferrets must be brought in enclosed carriers. It is recommended that dogs, cats, and ferrets older than four months receive their first two shots one year apart followed by booster shots every three years.
For more information about participating or requirements for attending with a pet, residents can contact the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 869-6311.
