Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected during the team’s 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on May 20. The incident occurred after a disputed call at second base and a later outfield catch, both involving umpire Brennan Miller.
The situation is notable as it marks another high-profile confrontation between Boone and Miller, who were also involved in the well-known “savages in the box” episode in 2019. These interactions have drawn attention due to their impact on game outcomes and managerial conduct.
Boone’s frustration began when Anthony Volpe was ruled out on a steal attempt at second base, a decision upheld after review. Boone reacted by tossing his gum and expressing anger from the dugout. “Probably just me being overamped, I don’t know,” Boone said.
Later in the seventh inning, with no challenges remaining for the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s lineout to center field was called an out by Miller. Boone yelled toward Miller, which led to his ejection—his second of the season and 48th of his career. This ties him with Tommy Lasorda and Billy Martin for 26th place among managers all-time.
Reflecting on the events, Boone said: “I thought there were two missed calls tonight. I thought Anthony was safe at second base, and then I thought the ball was trapped in the outfield, and we didn’t have a challenge in that spot.” He added: “That being said, I probably overreacted to it a little bit. I kind of snapped on it a little bit because I felt there were two calls, and then when you can’t challenge because you feel like one’s already been missed – I didn’t control myself very well.”
